Recently we have witnessed a huge shift from within the fitness industry as a whole, with it moving away from the old isolated, weights and machine driven exercise programs, towards a more whole body, synergistic movement based model. The reason for this is that as more and more of us spend the day sitting for extended periods of time, our bodies are baring the brunt in terms of ill health, both physically and mentally/emotionally. Functional training attempts to solve this problem by taking on a more integrative, wholesome approach to fitness, health and wellbeing.
The older form of exercise routines certainly makes for stronger, fitter bodies, but how much does it help us achieve true health and wellbeing in the long term? As human beings our bodies love variety and being challenged, with recent research showing that when we emulate childhood movement patterns based on skill-acquisition and neural adaptation the whole body is affected in a positive way.
Let’s look at the kettlebell for instance: this is a marvellous functional training tool suitable for any level and age, with movement patterns possible across all planes, with upper and lower body activation, as well as cardiovascular, strength and neuro-muscular improvement. As we become more competent with this tool we also acquire neural adaptations, becoming more accomplished and skilful and thus our exercise programs become more difficult to keep the body and mind working to their full potential. The pay offs are the release of endorphins along with whole body and brain activation as both left and right hemispheres are stimulated, allowing for a greater capacity to achieve our overall health benefits.
We are proud to be part of the Master Functional Trainer (MFT) program run by the Australian Institute of Kettlebells (AIK). This certification means that our trainers have completed an extensive course covering mobility, powerbag, battlerope, kettlebell and suspension training techniques providing them with all the knowledge they need to provide truly functional training in Perth WA.
